Klosterbrauerei Weissenhoner - Germany
"Bonator Doppelbock A dark double, spicy and strong, as tradition requires. A classic not only for Lent. Liquid does not break fasting - this was a fasting rule at the time of the Benedictine monks in Weißenohe. Today we owe the mirror carp as a fasting food and the strong double goat as a liquid food in this barren time.Since the Benedictine monks feasted on the more brewed Bock beers during the mearsent, this aroused the envy of other religious communities, which complained about it to the Pope in Rome: the Benedictines would not fast with their Bock beers, but feast! On the basis of this complaint, the Benedictines sent a barrel of Bock beer to Rome to let the Pope taste and decide himself. Since they knew its beer and its shelf life during the journeys from Bavaria to Rome, which lasted weeks and months in the Middle Ages, they did not do so without ulterior motives. Because the beer sent arrived in Rome, as expected, spoiled, i.e. inedible sour. Whereupon the Pope, after a cautious taste, said, "Whoever drinks such a horrible beer is a true penitent." The Benedictines loved to continue to do this penance and fasted with (fresh) bock beer."
