Initially mistaken for a simple diptych of meaningless shapes, the Museum Pieces series rewards prolonged examination with an increasingly unstable arrangement of fresh passionfruit, lime, nectarine and those impossible citrus aromas that seem to exist somewhere between sound and color. In Pt II, a deft application of Rakau quietly shifts the balance towards soft apricot and ripe pear.

Critics have proposed that the series of work represents nothing at all. Others maintain that it depicts refreshment in its purest abstract form. Both camps tend to become remarkably agreeable after a second glass.

Like great experiments in non-objective composition, the Pieces series asks drinkers to abandon the comforting illusion that every beautiful thing must resemble something else. Here, color has become aroma, geometry has become flavor, and the only discernible perspective is the angle at which the glass is tilted.

Conservation remains impossible. Over time thirsty visitors will result in the gradual disappearance of the exhibit—a process regarded by the attending staff not as deterioration, but as successful interpretation."
